Nestled in the heart of Newark, Mi Pequeño Mexico Restaurant serves an authentic taste of traditional Mexican cuisine that transports diners straight to the colorful streets of Puebla. Located at 81 Ferry Street, this vibrant eatery is a beloved gem for locals and visitors craving genuine Mexican flavors crafted with passion and attention to detail.
The menu at Mi Pequeño Mexico is a celebration of Mexico’s rich culinary heritage, featuring standout dishes such as the richly spiced Birria Tacos, the comforting and satisfying Sopes, and the savory Enchiladas Rojad, which are especially praised when upgraded to “mi pequeño style” for an extra depth of flavor. Each dish bursts with fresh ingredients—from zesty, handmade guacamole paired with crisp, salty chips to the delightfully tender Prawn Cocktail and the aromatic Mojarra al Mojo de Ajo, which offers a buttery garlic experience that lingers fondly on the palate.
Beyond entrees, the soups here stand out with options like the traditional Pozole and the subtly smoky Caldo de Pollo con Chile Guajillo, perfect for warming up on cooler days. Desserts such as the delicate Flan and refreshing Gelatina Jello offer a pleasant sweet finish that complements the savory meal beautifully.
One cannot visit Mi Pequeño Mexico without indulging in their famed Birria Tortas or the hearty Cemitas Milanesa de Pollo—crispy, tender chicken cutlets layered inside soft buns, delivering a texture and flavor harmony that customers like Alex Schmidt rave about as “unbelievable” and “completely unique.” The atmosphere here feels genuine and welcoming, embraced by friendly staff ready to ensure each visit feels memorable, whether you’re dining with family or friends.
While some visitors note a distinctive aroma when entering, it is arguably part of the authentic kitchen hustle and vibrant preparation process that sets this spot apart from more commercial Mexican joints. The lack of alcoholic beverages is easily offset by an impressive array of house-made juices, including refreshing Horchata and an inviting Passion Fruit drink, enlivening the senses and perfectly balancing the meal’s flavors.
Mi Pequeño Mexico, with its combination of affordable prices, rich, traditional recipes, and heartfelt hospitality, has firmly established itself as one of Newark’s premier destinations for Mexican cuisine. Whether you're seeking a fulfilling plate of Chilaquiles, a comforting bowl of Sopa de Tortilla, or an adventure in taste with their Carne Asada Bistek Tacos, this restaurant delights with every bite. If you’re craving authentic Mexican food made with care and tradition, Mi Pequeño Mexico is the destination you won’t want to miss.
10/10, the Salted Beef Cemitas and Birria tacos were unbelievable. Completely unique experience, you cannot find this kind of authentic Pueblo Mexican food anywhere in NJ.
The enchiladas were phenomenal (make sure to upgrade them to mi pequeno style!). The red sauce had a nice heat, the rice and beans were flavorful, and this dish was VERY filling. The gauc was yummy, but a bit too salty for my taste. Limited number of vegetarian options.
Affordable Mexican place in Newark. I was there with my family (In-laws, husband, and 6-month old daughter) to attend a lacrosse championship at the Sports Illustrated Stadium and this place was conveniently located nearby. The staff were friendly and the food was good. The only thing was the smell walking in. It was very weird.
My fav Mexican place in Newark. Love the chimichangas and chicken enchiladas. Have had the birria tacos before too and think they are great. We always have prompt service. No alcohol here, but I believe you can BYO.
The food here was absolutely delicious! Was craving for authentic Mexican food and I finally found the right one here in New Jersey. The restaurant itself is very welcoming and well decorated. I ordered 3 entrees, an appetizer and 3 different drinks, im indecisive what can I say. Mole Poblano was my favorite love the presentation. The Cemita Milanesa de pollo (chicken cutlet) was delicious as well was only able to eat half of it the portions are big btw! I also had the Salsa Verde Chilaquiles, loved it, it was spicy but not overwhelmingly spicy it was a perfect balance honestly. For my appetizer I had nachos with salsa and as for beverages arroz con leche, Jamaica and Tamarindo was all 10/10 The total for everything was about $70 honestly a great price for what I ordered which was a lot. Will be coming here more often definitely my go to place.
Service was great, the lady was super attentive and friendly, she made sure to explain the dishes and the specials they had for the day, she also made suggestions as to what we might enjoy the most. The food was delicious, the tortilla was corn tortilla instead of the flour ones and the flavor of the meats were spot on. I've been here just a few times and the last time was the best one. I'm definitely coming back here after.
